Language development has been a point of focus for multiple studies. Theories have been developed and show an interesting link between the initial acquisition and development of languages and the continuous use of an acquired language throughout a person's life. Understanding the acquisition and development of language is critical to being able to understand how literacy skills develop and are developed in a classroom. This module will go through language acquisition, how it affects the four primary literacy skills, and how they intertwine in the process of balancing teaching and learning for English Language Learners (ELLs). The content takes a further step back to study what happens before the skills are acquired to reach the development and balance within teaching.
